Candid Alert: What’s Really in Your Protein Powder?

Many of us reach for protein supplements as a daily staple, but a recent investigation by Consumer Reports reveals a troubling reality: most popular protein powders and shakes contain high levels of toxic heavy metals, particularly lead.

The Heavy Metal Breakdown

In a test of 23 top-selling products, more than two-thirds contained more lead in a single serving than experts consider safe for daily consumption.

Some products even exceeded safety limits by more than 10 times.

On average, plant-based products contained nine times more lead than dairy-based alternatives. Naked Nutrition’s Vegan Mass Gainer and Huel’s Black Edition contained such extreme levels of lead that experts advise against using them at all.

Beyond lead, tests also detected cadmium and inorganic arsenic in several popular brands.

Why Is This Happening?

Plants naturally absorb contaminants from the soil, air, and water. However, the complex, mechanized process of extracting concentrated protein offers multiple opportunities for further contamination.

Compounding the problem is a lack of strict federal regulation; the FDA does not test these supplements for safety before they hit the shelves.

Our Candid Advice for Your Routine

You don’t need to panic, but it is time to be more selective about your protein sources.
